In this Wltoys K989 1/28 Rc drift project episode 9 we are going to upgrade the gear ratio... Explaining spur gears at
0:25 installing reduction gear at

6:42 Drift test at

By changing to a smaller drive shaft gear and a bigger spur gear to improve the top speeds of the drift car feeling like drifting in second gear or third gear without doing any mods keeping it simple
Making the Wltoys k989 drift easy around long corners and be really fast Rc car at a race track beating the Kyosho mini z easily
In the two sets of spur and reduction gears, you also get spare gears for the stock parts of the k989 that I recommend you buy now
Since we don't know how long Wltoys while keep on producing spare parts for this great 1/28 Rc drift car
Each set of gears cost only 3 dollars and if you don't want the spare parts and your only interested in upgrading the top speeds than you can buy just one set of spur gears and you get the smaller 27 teeth reduction gear inside the set
Making this a very cheap Wltoys k989 upgrade but also very good improvement without having to do any motor mods making it easy and keeping the possibility to change back to stock later if you want

- DIY Rc: well thank you sir we do ower best and it's still not the end of the project we have more upgrade and mods coming it's such a fun car thx for the comment :D
- DIY Rc: no not really you pay a lot extra just because of the name Kyosho and for the same money you have an awesome 1/10 drift car but upgrade parts for 1/10 Rc drift car are also very expensive and get a heavy tax because they are so popular
upgrade parts for the mini Q and Wltoys k989 are darn cheap compared to the Kyosho or 1/10 scale drift cars
- DIY Rc: yes MrE also got that extra package it means you have the new version from this year and you also have metal dog-bones the old version came with plastic and broke the first day
the extra gears you get with the car is what I'm using in this video
the 27T is for the drive shaft and fits good with the 19T spur gear mend for the motor
- RcNickster: Thumbs up from me bud.. Enjoyed the video and this part of the upgrade. Definitely noticing drifting a little easier now. a great looking car as I am concerned.. Thanks for sharing
- DIY Rc: I see that's smart idea luckily it comes with so many upgrade parts
even found metal arms and c hubs special made for the k989, not the mini Q
but very expensive for the size of course
you probably also visit a local racetrack if you have so many?
- Shah Ali: Hi Guys. In my WLToys 979 box it had another packet with a longer differential gear which I will use to elongate the chassis but also a 27, 21,19, 15 size gear. Did anyone else get these?
- DIY Rc: hahaha probably first view too :D:D:D
thanks :D
- DIY Rc: wow, thanks for the Love :D:D:D
appreciate the comment :D
- Beaver's Hobby: So in the motor gears bag there are 3 for motors, 15T, 19T and 21T. Interesting... I thought there were 4 from 15, 17 (stock), 19 and 21.
- Tomas Mozer: How To DIY Rc One drifter two racers and one for spares.
- DIY Rc: of course, i like beavers hobby and recommend him to watch if your interested in drifting the k989 we have a lot of the same content but different style
- Beaver's Hobby: Normally in drifting you need loads of torque to be able to break traction. I go with the low speed high torque so I can lit up the tyres at any given moment and to have controlled slides.
- Remote Addicted: Man I love this little thing! How much did it actually cost with all the mods?
- DIY Rc: if you really want some top speed then this is the way to go and a 4wd drift car like this extra power but your throttle control becomes more sensitive
if you install the one-way diff and get more oversteer you like to have less top speed and a more linear throttle control that's why this upgrade is better for a race car than a drift car :D
- Mechanical Engineers: Awesome men
- DIY Rc: thank you E will i'm glad it entertains you but we got something better coming
soon you get to see some flying wing video's i'm sure you going to like those more :D
- Ground Control RC: Great tutorial on changing the Spur and Reduction gear. Nice modification. Thanks for the video and Happy Drifting!
- DIY Rc: well MrE I only pick Rc cars with lot's of spare parts and upgrade possibility's
we like to build test improve and test some more :D
lets be honest if you can't do any mods where is the fun right?
- DIY Rc: 1/8 drift car is really big nice job and i agree for bigger cars like my FY03 we have full metal drivetrain you need to with all that power
but the wltoys k989 plastic gear are good except for the differential spider gears are weak
but you need to lock the rear diff anyways and for the front the one-way diff and those problems are fixed the rest stay plastic to keep the weight down is also very important to make it drift easy and the spare parts are so darn cheap and almost unbreakble making the k989 the best beginner drift car on a budget
- ian Loh: So no such thing as "best of both worlds"? just like i love both your channels? (°°,)
- Jason Sheeley: Yes they are very expensive to MOD. But then again offer alot more when it comes to modifications. Would probably be alot cheaper if it were a bigger scale rc
- Ed Will: Spectacular video.....
- Beaver's Hobby: And this is why our videos are interesting and different even we both do a drift car. Because we got different approach to do our cars. While your car is more stable at high speed and perfect for long sweeping corners. My car is more towards technical corners like gymkhana.
- DIY Rc: Cool are your going to make a faster or more like a crawler changing the gear ratio can go either way but it sure makes a difference :D
- WhoLock: I think HTDRc would agree that Beavers Hobby is also a good channel to watch for this project.
- RC Play Ground: Very nice work~!
Well done~!
First Like!!!
- Tomas Mozer: Always looking forward to your videos, they are the best K989 resource on YouTube. I have four K989's using your mods and tips. Keep up the work. Kudos
- Thijs fpv: cool man!
- Jason Sheeley: Yes agreed on the weight. I just ordered 10 replacement planetary gears for my a242. I've shredded 2 sets already. I've checked for a bent drive shaft or any other warpage in the sideline but it all is straight and true. I'm only using a 45c battery in it also so not that much burst on power. That's why I was wondering if there were any metal replacements. I know jjrc is very very similar also to wl toys and adapt the same parts. Might have to figure something else out. I've contacted wl toys directly and they offer no such gear
- DIY Rc: Ya that's true having a lot of torque makes drifting easy'r but if you really want to improve your skills you need to learn to drift with low power
just like real drift cars beginners start to learn in first gear and then step up to drifting in second gear and that's what I'm doing more or less
- Rc Magick Bobby: Good informative clip. I was thinking to upgrade again my Desert Eagle 3 buggy. Nice one :-)
- DIY Rc: Thank you Tomas Mozer apriciate your comment 😃
Wow you have 4 k989 that's nice
Are they all drift cars or also for racing?
- Jason Sheeley: Hello my friend! Do you know if the kyosho mini z and the wl toys share the same size drive shaft? I would like to replace the plastic planetary gears with metal ones. Thank you any info is very much appreciated.
- DIY Rc: so far 21 on the car and 25 on parts most parts cost only 3 dollar a piece is next to nothing
and the plastic is really strong nothing broke yet after driving like we stole it and jumping at the skate park it's a pretty good car except the diff spider gears are really small and worn out fast if you don't maintenance and fine tune of course but for drifting you lock the rear anyway and the front diff can be replaced with a metal one way diff but it's not an easy upgrade and we got some difficulties with it... coming up in next week
- 표정: Very Very Very Very nice vedeo!!!
- MrE: Cheers ,Dave.
Another great installment in this series - Such a versatile car for modding so more 989 parts inbound :)
Get that body on the car - its naked!
- DIY Rc: thanks mooo you too
really like that freaking boat is insane
looking forward to the first maiden voyage and maybe a fishing / FPV trip?
- DIY Rc: thanks dude
- Jason Sheeley: Very true. I have 6 wl toys models and they are the most reasonable to upgrade. I have a 1/8 scale drift rc by exceed. It came pretty much anodized and ready to rock and roll out of the box. I've done nothing but put wheels and tires on it and it hasn't cost as near as much as a kyosho on the 1/28 scale. I'm just a fan of full metal drive trains when it comes to drifting rc'S as it tends to be a little harder on them in my opinion. But I love what you've done with yours that thing rips
- RC Mooo: Another great video about your awesome project. Keep up the excellent vids! 👍
